Cheap Used Cars For Sale How to Find Them

Used car dealers normally tend to cluster in a specific area. You will drive down a certain street in your town or city, and you will see tens or even hundreds of 'cheap used cars for sale' signs. We all know that buying a used car can be a bargain, but it also carries certain risks. What should you look out for when buying one?

Firstly closely inspect the condition of the paintwork as well as the interior of the vehicle. If the car looks like it has never been washed before, the seats are dirty and scratched and the engine is so dirty that it's difficult to point out individual parts, chances are that the car has been neglected and that this neglect will go right through to the mechanical condition of the vehicle. Rust is something else that should send out warning signals.

Secondly you should ensure that the service manual of the car is available. Inspect it closely as well. If the car has been serviced on a regular basis by a legitimate service station you have a much higher chance of buying a vehicle without major hidden problems than otherwise.

You do not need to be a mechanic to test a car for certain common flaws and to make sure that you won't be facing major repair bills within the foreseeable future. Simply take the car for a test drive. Switch off the radio and listen carefully if there are funny noises coming from the gearbox. When you change gears there should be no scratching sounds and in an automatic vehicle the engine should not rev up after such a gear change.

While the vehicle is in a stationary position, rev up the engine a couple of times. Repeat the exercise several times, all the time watching the back of the car in the rear view mirror. If you see smoke belching from the exhaust pipe, the engine is most likely worn and urgently in need of repairs.

While driving the car, listen carefully for any funny noises that seem to originate from the back of the vehicle. A humming sound in a rear-wheel drive vehicle usually indicates a problem with the differential.

When a front-wheel drive vehicle is tested, once again park it in an empty parking lot. Make sure the steering wheel is turned completely to one side. Then reverse the vehicle. A clucking sound that sounds like its coming from the front wheels will usually indicate worn CV joints.

Finally, when you are choosing from a wide variety of cheap used cars for sale, don't choose one based on its age alone. The condition of a used car is much more important that its age. A ten year old car that has been well maintained is a much better buy than a two year old one that has been severely neglected.
